Exhausting означает 'изнурительный, утомительный': exhausting task, exhausting exercise. Exhaustive имеет значение 'тщательный, исчерпывающий': exhaustive investigation, exhaustive report. Ср. exhausting work 'утомительная, изнуряющая работа' и exhaustive work 'тщательно проведенная, исчерпывающая данную тему работа'.
